Reflecting the Resiliency of Nature, Restorative Greens Dominate Trend Predictions for 2022
The results are in, and the consensus is clear: green is ruling the zeitgeist as the new "it" color for 2022. Elected by top players in the realm of paint, varying shades of earthy, neutral greens have dominated trend predictions across the globe. And while other authorities in color, such as Pantone, have yet to reveal their selections for the upcoming year, it’s safe to assume that we'll be seeing green—and lots of it.
These unanimous decisions likely hint to shared experiences. In our post-COVID world, nature—an emblem of regrowth and resiliency—has been and continues to be a source of solace and hope for many. Often associated with health and rejuvenation, green is a rich and uplifting choice for design and decorating projects. It pays homage to nature, promoting an overall feeling of wellness and vigor.

OCTOBER MIST 1495, by Benjamin Moore
Described as a "gently aged sage that quietly anchors a space while encouraging individual expression through color," October Mist draws on natural elements—such as pebbles, grass and succulents—to achieve balance and stimulate a sense of warm reassurance. This soft and earthy shade of green also features subtle hints of gray, making it mild enough to work as a neutral.
The brand's Color of the Year for 2022, October Mist also serves as the main protagonist of Benjamin Moore's Color Trends palette for the upcoming year, which features 13 additional complementary colors inspired by natural motifs. "Much like the green stem of a flower, October Mist creates a canvas for the Color Trends 2022 palette—and the imagination—to blossom," says the company in a press release. "From refreshed primary colors to luminous pales and botanical hues, the Color Trends 2022 palette invigorates the senses and gives root to personal style."
BREEZEWAY MQ3-21, by Behr
Behr's 2022 Color of the Year, Breezeway is a pale, cool-toned green accented by hints of silver. Mimicking the aesthetic of sea glass naturally found on coastal shores, this tranquil shade "evokes feelings of coolness and peace while representing a desire to move forward and discover newfound passions," as Behr states in a press release. "Leading you from one place to the next, the color catches your attention and is an open invitation to experience the world with a fresh perspective."
An approachable yet noticeable color, Breezeway is versatile with strong appeal; its "breezy" quality is the perfect accompaniment to an array of palettes that use whites, grays and other earthy neutrals. The color is also a part of Behr’s larger 2022 Color Trends Palette, a collection boasting 20 shades inspired by natural influences. The palette's comprehensive range aims to motivate viewers to "enter the new year on a hopeful note, while still centering the home as an ultimate oasis."
EVERGREEN FOG SW 9130, by Sherwin-Williams
Offering nourishment and sophistication, Evergreen Fog by Sherwin-Williams is a "versatile and calming hue, a chameleon color of gorgeous green-meets-gray, with just a bit of blue," as the company describes. Its organic appeal embodies the idea of nature, and its neutral undertones make it incredibly adaptable for different design styles.
Sherwin-Williams' Director of Color Marketing, Sue Wadden, and the Sherwin-Williams color team looked to nature's restorative power as inspiration for choosing Evergreen Fog as their Color of the Year for 2022. In an interview about the selection process, Wadden recounts, "When our team and I chose this color, we knew there would be a bit of a long transition out of the COVID-19 pandemic. And people are seeking nourishing, healing, meaningful colors with strong associations to nature. The color green is the color of nature. And because it's so rooted in the natural environment, it creates a meditative mood you can relax into."
OLIVE SPRIG PPG1125-4, by PPG
PPG’s 2022 Color of the Year, Olive Sprig is a "an elegant, grounded, versatile and highly-adaptable gray-green," as described by the brand in a press release. A relaxed but enticing shade, the color "emulates the feeling of soothing aloe vera or a fragrant plant—brightening any space with organic liveliness." Its restorative green undertones also channel the resiliency of nature, signaling to healing and regrowth in our "new normal."
Under the theme Horizon (which represents post-pandemic states of hope, reflection and new beginnings), PPG's experts also created three different color palettes that hold Olive Sprig at their centers: Invaluable, Introspective and Inspired. The Invaluable palette uses bold color stories and draws "Gatsby-esque" inspiration from the past to create a "go-to glamorous palette of the present." The Introspective palette's comforting hues are perfect for those that "prioritize self-care and appreciate life's simple pleasures," while the Inspired palette uses "mood-boosting shades to turn up the volume and add an optimistic jolt of energy for spaces that need it most."
BREAKFAST ROOM GREEN No. 81, by Farrow & Ball
Named after the (usually) east facing rooms designed for eating the first meal of the day, Breakfast Room Green is one of the five colors that made Farrow & Ball's list of the top trending colors for 2022. A lively blue-green shade, the color—along with the others in the collection—offers a sense of nostalgia that nods to other popular design trends of the year, such as cottagecore and grandmillenial style.
Rooted in folk tradition and craftsmanship, the five-shade collection was chosen by Farrow & Ball's Color Curator, Joa Studholme, to evoke "the virtues of a simple life." Alongside Breakfast Room Green, the assortment includes elevated versions of classic primary colors, including white, yellow, red and blue. "They are an eclectic mix of the pure and the humble that evokes the warmth and harmony of a more innocent age while celebrating life today," mentions Studholme in a press release.
